Our Story
Established for Impact
In the 166th Meeting of ‘Academic & Administrative Committee of UIU’, which was held on 22 November, 2017, a decision was taken to establish one institute in the name of “Institute of Development Studies and Sustainability (IDSS)”. As per the proposal, which was endorsed by this meeting, the Institute of Development Studies and Sustainability (IDSS) at UIU shall be committed to interdisciplinary research and education, teaching, and collaborations with the government, NGOs, private sector to strengthen the science-policy-practice for advancing sustainable development in Bangladesh and beyond.
The IDSS promises to advance knowledge of Sustainable Development through its [Social Science] graduate, Postgraduate Diploma Programs (PGD), and outreach programs for the broader community. The IDSS is committed to manage and expanding the interdisciplinary major in Development Studies and Sustainability by providing students with fellowships, scholarships, and research/study opportunities through collaborations with universities in Bangladesh and abroad, national and international NGOs, UN organizations, and private-sector partners.
Finally, the institute promises to contribute to UIU’s vision of becoming the center of excellence in teaching, learning and research in the South Asian region and beyond.

Core Objectives
To study political, social, economic, humanitarian, environmental, and other challenges of Sustainable Development in Bangladesh and beyond.
To undertake and promote research on development issues, ethnic diversities, gender, migration, locally led adaptation, water governance, food security, climate change adaptation and mitigation, locally led initiatives, and cultural studies.
Undertake empirical research to bridge the gap between science-policy- practice.
Extend international academic exchange, research coordination and collaboration to foster global network of scholars.
Organize national and international seminars, workshops, conferences and disseminate research outputs.
